Firsts Give Redhill the Blues
The firsts kept their Championship hopes alive with an emphatic victory over fellow challengers Redhill in a game played at Jarvis Brook due to Crowborough's men using the Alderbrook for a friendly (which nobody told us about) the same afternoon. Fielding a team missing Michelle, TC, Milla, and pressing an injured Amy Neale into starting we put Redhill out of their stride right away, winning the physical challenges and closing them down quickly. We took the lead on 27 minutes, a deflected shot from Amy falling nicely for Ellie who hammered home from six yards. it should have been 2-0 ten minutes later as we sprang their offside trap but the ball ran away too fast down the slope with Ellie clear and she couldn't hook it back into the net with the keeper beaten. From the restart Redhill seemed more up for the game, and we rode our luck when Woody caught a Redhill striker in the area but the ref waved play on. Natalie then scored a wonder goal from an impossible angle about 20 yards out to settle things down, and despite increasing Redhill pressure we just managed to get bodies in the way to block any shots they had. Rachael wrapped things up in the second minute of stoppage time, heading in a superb right wing cross although she got a punch in the head from the Redhill keeper (all 6'2" of her!) for her trouble.

Firsts Go Down Fighting

As everyone predicted, the firsts were knocked out of the Sussex County Cup by a Brighton & Hove Albion side featuring seven faces from their recent Premier Division win over Charlton Athletic, but they did enough to scare the living daylights out of the Premier League side along the way. The pre-match talk about taking the game to them and not letting them settle was blown out of the water by Helen Whitton as we conceded the fastest goal in our history after only 30 seconds, her opportunistic 35-yarder curling over Woody into the far corner. Rather than heads dropping, though, this spurred us into action and we then enjoyed a good 10-minute spell, with both TC and Cha forcing saves from Lisa Murray, but the balance of play soon shifted back and much of the first half saw Brighton camped in our half as we kept giving away possession with hacked clearances and rushed passes. However, one of the few quality moves we produced saw TC equalise on the half hour, a long ball over the top was missed by the covering defender and she raced clear to tuck away one of her trademark finishes. Even though the goal was totally against the run of play, it rocked Brighton out of their rhythm and the game evened up towards half time.

We had had the advantage of the slope on the Ringmer pitch in the first half, but if anything our second half play was of a much higher standard and we matched them throughout the rest of the game. Unluckily, we went behind again on 55 minutes to a quality chip over Woody which everyone thought was over the bar until it dipped just under, but we weren't finished yet! After a crude challange on Kerry which saw Kerry Dawkins rightly booked, we produced a quality move to equal anything Brighton produced on the night, TC's cross being hammered in by Nat Bungay on the volley for her first goal of the season. Game on again! Brighton's superior fitness and experience finally told with twenty minutes left as they capitalised on a defensive mix-up, Kirsty initially clearing off the line but straight to another Brighton player following in who slotted coolly past her. Not a single Crowborough head went down, though, and we spent the remainder of the game pressing for the equaliser, and on many occasions before the end Brighton were forced into desperately hacking the ball away just as we had done in the first half. Both Nat and Rachael can count themselves unlucky not to have connected with good chances to put away our third goal but in the end it was not to be.

Firsts Gain Crucial Win, 2nds Celebrate Survival
The firsts kept their Championship hopes alive and all but extinguished Hastings' with a crushing 4-0 win at the Pilot Field this afternoon. We got off to a dream start as Cha caught the defence competely square and, despite the keeper blocking her initial attempt, ran in the rebound with only two minutes played! Nat then somehow contrived to spoon the ball over an open goal from literally a foot out, but we were totally in control and playing our best football of the season, and a flowing move brought our inevitable second from Rachael on the half hour. The second half was a more even affair, and we lived dangerously at times before two late strikes from Ellie sealed a fine victory. The 2nds gained revenge for their defeat at Castle Colts the other week, but had to come from 0-1 down at half time to eventually triumph 3-1, the goals coming from Kim, Francesca (again!) and Sarah.

Firsts Gain Ground on Leaders, Seconds Avoid Relegation as Both Win
The firsts made the long journey to the Isle of Wight worthwhile with a resounding 7-1 win which, in all honesty, could have been double that score but for some inspired goalkeeping and wayward shooting. Due to some clash with a youth Cup game, we actually kicked off at 12.50 and took the game to them from the start, Rachael missing a gilt-edge chance in the first minute. In fact, it took us 17 minutes to score, Ellie taking the ball around the keeper. A great move doubled the score on the half hour, with Kirsty crossing from the left for Rachael to make up for her miss at close range. Another from Ellie and one from Michelle made it 0-4 at half time. Despite dominating, we struggled to increase our advantage until 20 minutes from time when Ellie completed her hat-trick. Woody then swapped outfield and, within a couple of minutes, we conceded a comedy goal as a long punt bounced over stand-in keeper Tracey Naden and a combination of her, an IOW striker and Andi bundled the ball into the net. However, as she did against Haywards Heath Utd in the Cup, Woody scored within 5 minutes of coming out to restore the advantage and Ellie completed the scoring with her fourth of the afternoon. The 2nds completed their first League double of the season and ensured Division Two football for next year with a 1-0 win over Meadow Sports. Francesca got the all-important goal, her first ever for the Club.

Firsts Also Suffer the Extra Time Blues, 2nds Score Four But Lose
The firsts crashed out of the League Cup at Woking today, suffering their second defeat in successive weeks at Westfield. In a strangely subdued but much more open game than last weeks, both sides missed glorious chances to win the game in regulation time, but with Woody in superb form for us and their goal appearing to have been clingfilmed there was no score and the game looked to be going to penalties when a 30-yard strike from a Woking substitute caught the wind and carried over Woody's head into the net. The seconds went to Castle Colts with the bare eleven an missing a number of players who featured in Wednesday's game and went down 6-4, all our goals coming from Terri. The result means we are still in with a chance of relegation, although the demise of Valley Valiants has eased that somewhat.

Battling 2nds Go Out in Extra Time
The 2nds overcame a dreadful first half display to outplay Southdown for long periods of their County Trophy semi final, but eventually went down to two extra time goals. Southdown started the match positively, and for almost the entire first half we were hoofing the ball out of play or giving it back to them under no pressure. However, one of the few decent moves we put together saw us take the lead, a long ball over the top from Becky James finding Nat outpacing the defence to shoot low under the keeper. However, after that it was business as usual and it took Southdown only five minutes to hit the equaliser, their striker running unchallenged down the left flank for 25 yards before crossing low for a six-yard tap in at the far post. Incredibly, despite their monopoly of possession, there was no further scoring and the sides went in level at half time. The second half was almost the mirror image of the first, as we hammered them from the restart, stroking the ball around confidently, and suddenly it was the Southdown defence panicking and hoofing the ball out of play as we spent almost twenty minutes camped in their half. Unfortunately we were unable to take advantage and the game then swung back the other way, with only a superb one-handed save from Tracey Naden denying them the winner. Our best chance fell to Terri from a free kick, but her goalbound effort was headed off the line by Sarah! So onto extra time, and a farcical turn of events as we were told that the lights were to be switched off at 9.30pm, leaving us only 15 minutes to play! Southdown saved the County FA's blushes with a goal in each 9-minute period, their third a superb 25-yard lob worthy of winning any game.

Luck Runs Out at Woking

The firsts suffered their first defeat since November, going down 2-1 after taking the lead through Rachael on the half hour. We'd started like a house on fire, dominating the first ten minutes totally, but then Woking gradually got into the game and the goal looked like it had come at just the right time. However, we then looked even more off the pace and they equalised within 5 minutes, dreadful marking allowing Vinny Clifford a shot which seemed to trundle goalwards in slow motion. The second half continued in much the same vein, and when Emma Constable was left in acres of space outside the penalty area which beat Woody with a sublime chip. only with 20 minutes to go did we collectively wake up, and we spent the majority of this time in their third. The best chances fell to TC who broke through but hit her shot over the bar, Michelle who hit the bar with a 20-yard free kick and Ellie who screwed the ball the wrong side of the post twice from close range. Let's hope we can learn from this and get revenge in next week's Cup game there.

The 2nds warmed up for their County Trophy semi final with a 6-1 friendly win over one of the other semi-finalists, Crawley Down. Scorers were Kim, Sarah (2) and Nat Waller (3). The final quarter of an hour when Terri brought herself on were anything but friendly, though, and one has to wonder what the ref was doing after one of the Crawley Down players slapped Terri around the face. Not really the way to make friends and influence people - don't think we'll bother next time.
